THE SOMALIA AJURAN HISTORY 

The old Mogadishu city Hamarweyn , Merca, Barawe, Kismayo, Stone City of Gondorshe , the FakhruDin Mosque(7th oldest mosque in Africa) visited by Historian Ibn Batuta in 1331, minted coins , and medieval hydraulic irrigation systems on the Shabelle/Jubba rivers and the annual Istunka martial arts Stick fighting ceremony in Afgooye ….remnants and reminders of the great # Ajuraan Empire that ruled Most of Somalia from 13th Century to 18th Century stretching from Kismayo to the south to Hobyo on the Somali north coast …Bardheere to the West and Qelafe in Somali Ethiopia and Beledweyn.

The Empire traded with Arabia, Venice, Ottoman Turkey , North Africa and China in the Far East, Swahili City States, Indian Ocean Islands of Madagascar where some Somali sailors settled, Comoros, Maldives Islands and wading off Portuguese invaders for 200yrs.The Ajuraan together with Ottoman and Omani Arabs helped to liberate Mombasa from Portuguese( 1593-1698 Portuguese ruled Mombasa) and were part of the navy that fought Portuguese to oust Portuguese from Oman and secure Zanzibar. Ajuuraan Empire offered refuge to Muslims fleeing Spain after Crusaders took over Andalusia. Immigrants from Persia,Turkey and Yemen settled in large numbers resulting into the rise of the Benaadir people of old town Mogadishu who are of mix heritage.Their Mamluk soldiers were well known across the Muslim world and beyond to Portugal and Iberian Peninsular. Traveller Ibn Batutta describes a “rich” life in the Ajuraan capital Mogadishu…it was the most prosperous dynasty in Somali history.

After the fall of the dynasty the Ajuraan were either forced in to integrating with other clans with each clan claiming defeat over it or moved to Wajir where they live exclusively as an independent clan not integrated into other clans..here some having been assimilated into speaking Oromo language…that was some real long distance from the seat of the Ajuraan Empire Sultan…
