GOVERNOR, CS TO OPEN SH 50MILLION MOYALE MARKET

By KEN BETT

Agriculture and Livestock Cabinet Secretary Willy Bett and Marsabit governor Ukur Yattani are expected to commission a modern livestock market in Gurumesa, Moyale on Thursday.
The Sh50million market is expected to improve livestock trade in the region.

The market construction was funded by USAID and implemented by the Resilience and Economic Growth in the Arid Lands-Accelerated Growth (Regal-AG).

The market construction, which is part of Sh35billion investment by the American government, has seen the county get seven markets to the tune of Sh160million.

Speaking during the opening of Turbi livestock market two months ago Mr Yattani said middlemen and unnecessary taxes, were affecting locals’ earnings from the trade.

“The markets will help move our people from subsistence to commercial oriented enterprises,’’ said the governor.

Mr Yattani also appealed to the development partners to help in exploring export markets by constructing an international airport in the region.

He added that Segel international abattoir which is located 30km from Marsabit town is 80 per cent complete enabling residents to access the global market.
